Friends, family and neighbors wait all year for Holi when people gather together for an entire day of laughter, fun and of course, color! But as with all public celebrations such as New Year’s Eve, it is important to follow certain guidelines to ensure that women and children are safe amid the bustling – and often crowded – celebrations.
In the third year of the pandemic, it is twice as important for everyone to follow all COVID guidelines to make sure that we do not contract or spread the COVID-19 virus to friends and strangers.
Here are 10 suggestions to keep you and your loved ones safe during this Holi season 2022!
1) Get consent before approaching anyone
The excitement of Holi sometimes is in surprising people with a splash of color and watching their reaction. But people, especially strangers, may feel uncomfortable being caught off guard. Before approaching anyone, make sure you get their consent before you throw powder or water on them.
2) Feel comfortable saying NO
Develop the habit of being comfortable saying NO if you do not want anyone (friend/family or stranger) to play Holi with you, especially if it involves direct contact.
3) Keep your friends/family around you
In any situation, safety in numbers greatly reduces the risk of harm. When engaging in Holi festivities in public places, stay close to your friends or family members.
4) Stay away from large crowds of strangers
If, while playing during Holi in public places, you feel uncomfortable, then make sure you stay away from large crowds of people. This is especially important since the festivities include people in close proximity to one another.
5) Keep an eye on children at ALL times
Whether playing Holi in a public place or at a private party, ensure that you watch the children you are responsible for – at all times. The chemicals in the powder may be very harmful to children who may accidentally touch their eyes or mouth which have harmful substances on them.
6) Keep your mobile phone (wrapped in plastic) with you
It is important to be able to reach people when you need help or when you are ready to leave. Ensure that you carry your mobile phone with you and it may help to cover it in plastic to ensure that it does not get wet and malfunction.
7) Follow all COVID guidelines
While many people may still be hesitant to enjoy Holi as in pre-COVID days, many are opting to take part in the festivities while doing their best to follow all COVID protocols such as: being around only a small group of people, keeping your mask on at all times, never touching your face and constantly washing your hands.
8) Don’t drink/eat anything offered to you by strangers
A part of Holi is the food and drink associated with the festival. When in public, make sure you do not accept food or drinks from strangers, as intoxicants have different effects on different people.
9) Speak up ask for help if you need it
There may be times when you get separated from your friends/family or you are around people who are not respecting your personal space. If you need help, feel comfortable to speak up and ask people around you for help.
10) If you see someone who needs help – help them
An important part of staying safe is being there for people – including strangers – who need help. If you see a woman or child in need of help, step forward and help them. You will make a difference!
Again, as with all public celebrations, adopting certain safety measures will ensure a safe holiday. Happy Holi!
