In Government schools across the state of Telangana, over 3,300 students have been participating in Cyber Congress which is a police program to fight cyber crime and make cyberspace safe for women and children. Having successfully completed four months of the Cyber Congress program, the students took part in an investiture ceremony held by Telangana State Police Women Safety Wing, SHE Teams, School Education Department of Telangana and NGO partner Youngistaan Foundation.
The young students, who are from 1,650 schools located across 33 districts of Telangana, have been trained on vital topics of cyber safety and security and were recognized as cyber cops – to be known as Cyber Ambassadors.
Two students from each school were presented with a special badge and introduced to their entire school as Cyber Ambassadors. Following the ceremony, the young students took to the stage to create awareness on:
- mobile security features
- digital citizenship
- preventive steps to take in case of financial fraud
- crimes against women and children
- and many more concepts of cyber safety and security
These are concepts that the students have been learning in their training sessions of the 10-month long Cyber Congress initiative. Toward the end of the ceremony, all the students took a pledge to be safe on the internet and to make cyberspace safe for the public.
Chief Guests Smt. Swati Lakra IPS, Additional Director General of Police attended the Investiture Ceremony at Hyderabad Mahboobia Girls High School and addressed the assembled students, parents and dignitaries:
Smt. Swati Lakra IPS also added that all students should be aware of ongoing cyber crimes, learn how to prevent these issues and create awareness amongst other children and within their respective communities. This is a message that was once again reiterated to the parents of the students who participated in the session. Smt. Swati Lakra IPS congratulated the two young Cyber Ambassadors who actively took part in the training sessions and shared their knowledge with the other children.
Speaking at the same ceremony, Smt. Sumathi Badugula IPS, Deputy Inspector General of Police, shared:
The 3,300 young Cyber Ambassadors included the students located in the most remote locations of Telangana and are all being trained and nurtured with the help of structured learning management systems and with the active convergence of the SHE Teams, Nodal Officers, NGO mentors, cyber experts and teachers at the district level.
These Cyber Ambassadors will go on to join the Girl Safety Clubs, started by the Women Safety Wing, which will be established in every educational institution of the state (schools and colleges). In the Girl Safety Clubs, the Cyber Ambassadors will empower women through self-help groups to counter the cyber crimes they face in their lives.
Cyber Ambassadors are the torch bearers who will work as “police officers without uniform” alongside the local SHE Teams officers to safeguard the public. These students will team up with the police to advocate for preventive and precautionary measures of cyber security by providing simple cyber safe solutions to ensure public safety.
The ceremony on November 23rd, 2021 was held to mark the completion of four months of the Cyber Congress project, a progressive step taken by Women Safety Wing, Telangana Police under their CybHER initiative to create a safe cyberspace for women and children.
